Swispers VS Ulta Cotton Rounds

Swispers, Ulta, cotton rounds, favorites
This will be brief!

The thing that I hate about some cotton rounds is that the fibers break lose from the round.  I think that this comparison shows why.

The top cotton round is a Swisper.  Granted, you can get a great deal when you purchase them from Costco BUT, look at the texture.

The bottom cotton round is from Ulta.  Yes, they are like $2.49/package but if you want something that holds up better, I think it is a better deal.

I will continue to purchase Ulta Cotton Rounds.

Trash OR Treasure - End of Winter 2017

empties, beauty, hair, skincare, fragrance
It's time to talk trash!  From left to right:

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser in Brightener - This is a great brightening product.  The tip on this one was getting pretty gross so it was time to open a new one.  I don't find that it settles in fine lines BUT I think it does break down after a few hours.  Still love it!

dr. Brant Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer - This is a holy grail product for me. It evens out skin tone, minimizes the appearance of pores and makes for a smooth canvas (over all those fine lines) for my foundation.  The smaller size is actually a better price but I am thinking they may have caught on.

dr. Brant Poredermabrasion (sample) - I mixed this in with my regular face wash and really liked how it worked at removing makeup and smoothing my skin.  I would probably purchase a full-size but I have a couple bottles of the Clinique exfoliating face wash to get through first.

Too Faced Lipstick in Cougar - I loved the color and packaging but have had it for awhile and now it smells and tastes horrible.  Wouldn't repurchase.

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Hand Cream - I keep this on the end table in the TV room and like the way it works.  It is a lighter cream that blends in nicely without feeling greasy.  I have repurchased. It is also good packaging for travel.

Sephora Gel Lipliner in The Nudest - Another holy grail.  I always have a backup on hand.  It is a my lips but better color.  Smoothes out the lines in my lips and is great for lip contouring.

Maybelline Lash Sensational - HOLY GRAIL!  Do not waste your money on more expensive mascaras before trying this one.  My mom loved the Better than Sex mascara and has since made the switch.

Big Sexy Hair Get Layered - I love this hairspray.  I use it at my roots and as a finishing spray.  Doesn't dry out my hair and works well at hold without being stiff.  I have repurchased.

Macadamia Oil Deep Hair Masque - I love the smell and how soft it leaves my hair.  I use this every Sunday and don't completely wash it out so that it stays in all night.  I then wash my hair the next day with my Suave Daily Clarifying and Pureology Hydrating shampoo. I will continue to repurchase after having tried a few other hair masks.

American Crew Shave - My husband didn't really have a feeling one way or another about this product.

L'Oreal Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist - LOVE LOVE LOVE!  Have already repurchased a couple back ups.   Great for fine hair to give it volume.

Rusk Plumping Mousse - I will continue to repurchase.  This is a holy grail hair product.  I use one pump with a little water, rub it in my hands and work through my roots.  Then I apply the L'Oreal Boost It all over.

Tree Hut Sugar Scrub in Coconut Lime - I don't love the packaging but I do love the product so will continue to repurchase until I find something better.

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash - Doesn't make me itch and does the job.  Will continue to purchase.

Aromatherapy Stress Relief Eucalyptus Spearmint Body Wash - My husband used this.  Neither eucalyptus nor spearmint are good for your skin but he likes the smell.  Will not repurchase.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist - This is also a great hair mask.  I use it as a daily conditioner, not leaving it in as long but also as a mask when I don't have any of the Macadamia.  Smell is also nice.

MightyFix February 2016 - Dryer Balls

natural products, wool dryer balls, dryer sheet alternative, organic
The February MightyFix box included Cotton Dryer Balls.  I actually purchased some of these awhile back from Amazon and use them with every load.  They are suppose to make your clothes dry faster and replace dryer sheets.  Do they work?  I am on the fence.  I do think that they make your clothes more fluffy but I don't know that they make your clothes dry faster.

The card that came with them suggested you put essential oils on them to make your clothes smell good.  I love that idea but the concern is leaving residue on the clothes.  Have any of you tried that?

I live the idea of Might Nest's subscription service.  Natural products that are good for you and the environment and for only $10/month I don't think you can go wrong.

di Oro Living Silicone Spatulas from Amazon

large, medium, silicone, metal, chef series, kitchen utensils
It's time to update the kitchen utensils.  I am moving away from plastic and going to either bamboo or silicone.

The di Oro Chef Series spatulas from Amazon are the latest to join the family.  I had purchased another set of silicone utensils last year and although they were colorful and did the job, I wasn't really happy with the spatulas.

The di Ora spatulas are really heavy duty.  They have a nice weight to the handles and the actual flipping part doesn't bend with heavier foods.  They clean easily and are a great size.  Another thing to consider when looking for a silicone spatula is the edges.  The previous set, the edges were a little thicker which made it a little tricky getting under food.  These are thin and move around nicely.

HIGHLY recommend!!

First Impression: Yuni Shower Sheets

large body wipes, refresh, clean, deodorize, plant-based, biodegradable, compostable, organic, natural
I found the Yuni Shower Sheets on  For those occasions you want to freshen up but don't have time or access to a shower, these sounded perfect.  I have tried a variety of "baby wipes" and they just don't do the trick.

Here are my first impressions.

Size - I would say that they are about the same size if not a little longer than your average washcloth.  I think you could actually cut it in half and save the other half for another use

Material - Although they look a little thin, they are pretty hearty and hold up well

Scent - I agree with their description in that it is a minty citrus (with a slight rosemary) scent but it is soft and not overpowering at all.  I am sensitive to some scents and this didn't bother me at all

Ingredients - Earth friendly biodegradable and compostable.  Alcohol free and made with natural ingredients.  Not tested on animals, no formaldehyde, paragons, phthalates, petrolatum, sodium laurel/laureth sulfates, mineral oil, synthetic colors or fragrances, GMOs, PBA, EDTA, PEGs

Price - $15 for 12 packets, which is $1.25/cloth

This is really the only con that I can come up with.

I would say if you like to camp, workout, hike or suffer from hot flashes or are just a person who sweats easily, this might be worth looking into.

Trash OR Treasures - January 2017

haircare, makeup, household, favorites, hates, trash or treasures
It's time for another round of Trash OR Treasure:

I have tried an extensive number of hair care products to help my fine hair.  Here are some of the latest:

Alterna Caviar Working Hair Spray - This is a good hairspray but not worth the price tag. I would not repurchase UNLESS Costco got it again as they sell it for a great price.

L'Oreal Boost It Air- Blown Texture Mist - I use this everyday with my Rusk Plumping Mousse.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo - I love this shampoo but the best part was the scent.  That has changed so I am not sure if I would purchase it again.  Also with the new one, I don't know that it is doing a lot to help with dry winter hair.

Redken for Men Invigorating Shampoo Mint Clean - This was my husband's shampoo.  It was okay but I think he prefers the Paul Mitchell equivalent.

Lush Big Sea Salt Shampoo - This is another one that I love.  The scent, the way it volumizes and leaves my scalp really clean.

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24 Hour Foundation - I had a couple of samples of this and ended up buying the full size.  After using awhile I will let you know what I think.

bareMinerals Prime Time Foundation Primer - This is a silicone base but I liked it.  I think it does what it says but for those of us with an oily t-zone, it doesn't help up as well as some of the other primers I have tried.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield - This was a lot like the bareMinerals.  It was good but not sure I would purchase a full size.

Urban Decay Naked Concealer - I liked that this was very pigmented but not heavy.  I will be purchasing the travel size next to see how it goes.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Primer - A fave!  I have repurchased many times.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation - Can I just say that they do NOT give enough product to really test it out.  I think that this might be one that I like but it is a little lighter coverage than I tend to get.

Sephora 15-Hour Mattifying Foundation - I have a full-size of this but I find myself mixing it with others as it doesn't perform as I would like by itself.

Sephora Gel Lip Liner in The Nudest - LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Scentsy bars in Root Beer Float, Silver Bells, Eucalyptus and Iced Pine - All are favorites. I just wished they would carry them all the time!

Alba Very Emollient Shave Cream - I love this stuff.  I am trying out the new Tree Hut product right now but I think I will go back to the Alba.

Biokleen Bec Out Fresh - This is so much better than Fabreeze!  Just harder to find but I love that it is made not only in the USA but in Vancouver, WA.

Colgate Enamel Health - This is my holy grail tooth paste.

The Honest Co Wipes - Not much of a scent, think and larger size.  I continue to repurchase.

Trader Joe's Lemon Hand Soap - I just wish Trader Joe's was closer but when I go, I always pick up a couple of bottles.

Life - A Post About Fear

Hope, fear, people, nature
Being that the blog name is Life, Lipstick and Lattes, I thought I would change it up from the norm and talk a little bit about life and fear.  Growing up, I wasn't a risk taker and to this day I would say that probably hasn't change much EXCEPT I have gotten better at stepping out of my comfort zone and every time it has ended up a positive choice.  Here are a few examples that I could think of that I think most of us can relate to:

Before we had smart phone and GPS, did you ever find yourself driving down a road and wonder where another road went but were too afraid of getting lost?

Has a great job opportunity presented itself but you were too afraid that you wouldn't be good enough?

Have you ever looked at someone who was different than the norm and opted not to talk to them or even say hello?

Fear drives so much of our thought process and decisions but if we step back for a moment and think things through from another direction it may prove to be worthwhile.

Take that road.  What is the worst thing that can happen?  You get lost and have to stop and ask for directions (or these days find your way out on your phone or GPS).  But in doing that, what if that road led you to a cute little shop or a beautiful place worthy of a picture or even an amazing restaurant.

The job, well, maybe the worst case is that you find out that it wasn't a good fit or you didn't have the skills you needed BUT what if that company was one that believed in education and training getting you what you needed so you could succeed and thrive OR lead to another job where you were a perfect fit.

And that person who didn't look like what society calls "normal", they could end up being a mean person who you don't have to have anything to do with again BUT what if that person had a kind heart and open mind and had similar interests or better yet introduced you to something new you would have never otherwise tried.

Although fear can be a good thing think about where it is coming from and then step back and think "what if".  It may end up that having hope of something good leads to something even better.

First Impressions Dr. Brandt Needles No More 3-D Lip Plump Fix

lip plumper, lip moisturizer, dr brandt. nourish by night, plump in the day
I have tried my fair share of lip plumpers, the newest to the collection is the Dr. Brandt Needles No More 3-D Lip Plump Fix. At $39, this is a "unique dual-chamber serum for increased lip volume, moisture and color wear".

The biggest issue I have with this is the design.  The packaging is flimsy.  You have to turn the bottom to AM - PM or LOCK.  AM gives you the plumper and PM the moisturizer.  Well when you push the bottom to get the product, I also found it turning.

Plumping - I really don't have high exceptions of lip plumpers.  I mean really, you can't get the same affect as you would if you had collagen injections so go into it being realistic.  As long as the lines fill a little, I am happy.  This seemed to do that somewhat I guess.  I just don't know that it performed any better than the others I tried and this one is more expensive.

In regards to the moisturizing side, I don't feel like it does any better than the Aquaphor I currently use at night.

All-in-all, I don't think that I would repurchase and I am seriously considering sending it back.  Would it have been closer to $25, I would probably kept it but with poor packaging and less than exciting results, I just can't justify $39.

Apple Watch 2nd Generation Review

Fitness tracker, apps, weather, watch, text messages, smart watch, second generation
I've had a couple of fitness trackers but they weren't really fitting my needs.  The most recent was a Jawbone Up2 which had a good app but didn't have a watch, which after a few months of wearing I missed enough that it went in the garage sale pile.

The Apple Watch has been on my radar for awhile but that is a spendy proposition and didn't want it to end up the same way as my Jawbone.  Well, to my surprise, my husband got me the 2nd Generation Apple Watch for Christmas.

Out of the box it came with the white band as shown.  It is the aluminum frame version so it was the least expensive of the bunch, which is fine with me.

Mickey Mouse Face - his foot taps to the seconds and of course hands move with the time. When you tap the face, Mickey tells you what time it is and sometimes adds a greeting depending on the time of day.  There is also Minnie Mouse and a lot of other choices.

With that, you can choose the layout.  I added the date to the top left corner, the battery life to the top right and the weather at the bottom.

Text Messaging - It syncs with your iPhone so as far as the bluetooth range works, that is how far you can go from your phone and still get your text messages.  No more caring around the phone with me everywhere at home and work.

Calendar Alerts - Love this when I am moving around

Reminders - Cooking dinner and don't have your phone to set a timer?  Just talk into the watch and tell Siri to set a timer for you.  AWESOME feature that I use all the time.

Phone Calls - Just like text messaging, you can also receive and take calls.

Weather - You know the temperature which is great when you are worried about freezing temps like we have been having.

Activity Tracker - Like with the others, you can set it to tell you when to stand, when to get moving and get updates on how you are doing.

Breathe Reminder - Yes, that sounds silly and although I was a little skeptical, I think it is a good reminder to just concentrate on your breathing and use that time as some mental relaxation.  I admit I often dismiss it but my goal is to use it more regularly.

GPS - I typically use my phone but this is a good alternative if you are using it for walking directions or don't have a place for your phone in the car.

Watch Bands - They are CRAZY expensive on Apple.  I have been buying mine from Amazon and I can't tell the difference.  This makes the watch even more of an accessory item because you can change the color or use metal bands or even leather.  I already have  quite a collection.

The stand/dock that you see was also from Amazon.  It is perfect for a charging station and makes it a nightstand face as well.  Was under $10.

All in all, I love this watch!  The only downside is that it isn't girly as the face is pretty large and it is a little thicker than I would like BUT the pros way outweigh that issue.  If you are on the fence or considering a fitness tracker, I would seriously give the Apple Watch a look if you have an iPhone.

Instant Pot - Where Have You Been All My Life?!

6 quart, pressure cooker, rice cooker, crock pot, yogurt maker, saute, all in oneI've had the Instant Pot in my cart on Amazon for a very long time but was totally surprised when I opened it on Christmas morning.  A gift from my mom.

This is the 6 quart version and if you are not familiar (it is all over the internet) here is what it does:

Rice Cooker
Yogurt Maker
Slow Cooker
Pressure Cooker

My concern was that I loved being able to just put my ingredients in the crock pot in the morning and have everything ready when I got home.  That was quickly remedied when I browned a whole chicken in the Instant Pot, then added liquids and cooked it for 55 minutes (it was a big chicken) and it was done. Here is the recipe I followed.  While it was cooking I made the sides.  It was so moist and provided great leftovers for other recipes.

I also made Crack Chicken but I added jalapeƱo to mine and used chicken broth instead of water.  Then rather that serving with rice or pasta, I felt that it might need a side with a  little texture so made some crispy brown hash browns.   It was so delish but very rich.  I would probably add some broccoli to it next time.

I'm not a big yogurt lover but I have read that you never go back to store bought after making it yourself.  Guess I will add that to my list as well as an Oreo Cheesecake.

Follow all my Instant Pot adventures on FB and Pinterest.  And be sure to share your recipes or ones that you have tried as well.

First Mighty Fix - Bee's Wrap

saran alternative, natural, bees wax, mighty fix, mighty nest
I'm moving in the direction for healthier alternatives to anything and everything.  While on my quest, I came across a subscription service (which I love anyway) for natural products.

The website is Mighty Nest.  You can order items directly or sign up for their monthly box for $10/month.  I of course signed up and this is what I got.

Bee's Wrap

It's a healthy alternative for plastic wrap.  You can use it to wrap cheese, half a melon, veggies, bread or over a bowl.  It is made from beeswax, organic cloth, tree resin and organic jojoba oil.  It came with two sizes.  Large 12 x 14 and a medium which looks to be maybe 10 x 10.  To care for it, you hand wash in cold water with dish soap and hang to dry.  It can be reused for about a year.  It says not for meet and keep away from heat.

It's pretty cool!!  I am looking forward to getting a lot of use of them and I can't wait to see what else I get each month.

I don't get any referrals but I did get a coupon code for $7 off - INVITE7

Once you sign up, you can add other items to your box with free shipping.

Let me know if you give a try and what you think!

Sanheshun Lighted Magnifying Mirror

10x, LED, Warm light, magnification, tabletop, attaches to surfaces
My Costco mirror wasn't as bright as it once was and I found that it was taking up a lot of valuable counter space as well as an outlet.  I needed to find something that was larger than my magnifying travel mirror but something that wouldn't take up much space.  Meet the Sanheshun Adjustable LED Mirror with 10x Magnification.

I found this at Amazon for around $15.  There are a few that look the same but made by a different company.  This one had over 4 star reviews and was the least expensive.  After receiving, I think the difference was that this one didn't have a travel bag included.  I wish I would have paid attention to that as I think it would have been a good addition.

The mirror quality is good.  I like the little touch button at the top to turn the light on and off.  The light is plenty bright letting you see every hair, wrinkle and spot.  It takes three AA batteries (not included) and will mount to any smooth flat surface.  I am not sure how long the batteries will last but I do use it daily so I will report back when I have to do a battery change.

All in all, I would highly recommend.

Sephora VIB November 2016 Haul

The most recent Sephora VIB Sale came with a few favorites and a couple of new products:

Drunk Elephant (love the name and the cause) C-Firma Day Serum - This is a spendy product at $80 but minus the 20% made it a little more palatable.  It had good ratings on Paula's Choice Beautypedia site so here's hoping

Kat Von D Concealer Brush - I already have one and love it so had to buy another for my travel bag

Clinique City Block Purifying Charcoal Cleansing Gel - So weird that it comes out totally black.  Not sure why given the name but it sure does the trick at removing makeup

Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder - This was in my Kevyn Aucoin palette and is almost at pan.  It is the perfect color for shading and this packaging will be easier to travel with.  It even comes with a cute little pouch

Clinique Pep Start 2-in-1 Exfolliating Cleanser - I received a sample and loved how soft it made my skin and that it removed all my makeup so I had to buy the full size

Clinique Superbalanced Makeup - I use to be a huge fan of Clinique back in the day.  This foundation had some good reviews so I am anxious to give it a try

Dior Addict Lip Maximizer in the nude color - I have the pink and love the texture and the fact that it does seem to plump my lips

Sephora Gel Lip Liner in The Nudest - I LOVE this and have purchased three of them so far.  I will continue to repurchase

Stitch Fix November 2016

This is my second Stitch Fix box and once I try them on, if they all fit nicely I think I will keep everything in the box:

Splendid Ava Ankle Wrap D'Orsay Flats $90

Edyson Mayfare Bootcut Jean $78

Skies are Blue Kendruh Layered Hem Knit Top $48

41Hawthorn Queensland Dolman Jersey Top $48

Laju Edeva Button Up Top $64

Once you get your box, you get a personalized note from your stylist.  You pay $20 which go towards your purchase.  Not hard to do as they are usually right on with the clothes they send.  If you keep all 5 pieces and then you get a 25% discount. Free shipping for returns (a bag is included).

Should you decide to give it a try, my referral link is below.  You don't have to use it but it is much appreciated if you would as I get a $25 credit.

Once you receive your box, share what you got on my FB page.

Ulta Hair Haul October 2016

Those "Gifts with Purchase" always get me. This Ulta Hair Haul came with a variety of good items.  Let's start with the items I purchased:

Matrix Total Results High Amplify Hairspray - This is a new product for me and so far I like it.

Rusk Plumping Mousse - This is a holy grail product.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo - This is a repurchase.  I love the scent and you don't need more than a pea size amount so it lasts a long time.

Update:  The fragrance was one of the things I loved about this shampoo and they changed it.  Don't like the new scent.  Would not repurchase.

Keranique Micro-Exfoliating Follicle Revitalizing Mask - I had a sample of this and liked the concept so bought it at Ulta while it was on sale.  I ended up taking it back.  It made my hair feel heavy, almost dirty.

And now the Gift With Purchase:

LOVE the metallic purple bag, even though I have a ton of these smaller bags.

Perfumes are personal preference and I don't think that there was really anything that I cared for other than the Angel (which may be a guys cologne but smells good).

Anastasia Lip Gloss - This is a highly pigmented gloss.  I like this color but am not a bold lip person so a little goes a long way.

Tree Hut Shave Oil - I really like this.  The scent isn't so great and it appears that there is only one kind but I did purchase the full-size.

Hand Food - This scent is way too strong for me, would not purchase.

First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser - this is a thicker cleanser.  Reminds me a lot of the Paula's Choice one that I use.  I don't care for either really as they are too thick and hard to rub in your hands to lather all over your face.

Ulta Lip Gloss - I like their formula but don't care for this color.

Big Sexy Hair Powder Play - I am not a fan of this type of product but if I were to purchase, I would get a cheaper brand.

The other items I haven't tried.
